Above board

Above board refers to something done openly, honestly, and straightforwardly without deceit or dishonesty. It originates from pirates hiding crew members below deck during a raid, while those visible on the upper deck were considered “above board” and acting honestly.

Today, the term is used more generally to describe actions or transactions that are transparent and legitimate.
