Charted Depth

« Back to Glossary Index

The depths shown on the chart are the depths of the seabed below Chart Datum and are therefore the least depth expected at that point in normal circumstances.

Charted depth refers to the depth of water as indicated on a nautical chart. It is the depth of water at a specific location or along a particular route as depicted on the chart, and is used by mariners to determine the navigable depth for safe passage of vessels. Charted depth is typically measured in meters or feet and is based on hydrographic surveys conducted to accurately map the seafloor and water depths in a given area. It is important for mariners to reference charted depth information to avoid running aground or encountering navigational hazards while navigating at sea.
