Heave To

“Heaving To” is a manoeuvre in which a vessel stops forward motion and maintains a stable position relative to the wind and waves. To “heave to,” a boat adjusts its sails and rudder in a way that causes the vessel to drift slowly downwind while remaining under control. This technique is often used in heavy weather conditions to provide a temporary respite from rough seas or to wait for improved conditions before continuing on course.

It is usually achieved by lashing the helm in opposition to the sails. The vessel will gradually drift to leeward. The drift depends on the speed of the vessel’s design.
