Exam not invigilated

Due to the online nature of the assessment, the reverse of your course completion certificate will be marked as 'This exam was not invigilated' upon successful completion. This is acceptable for most, as it is about gaining the required knowledge for the practical course.

If you require the certification for commercial purposes, you may need the exams to be invidualted. If you have this requirement, please get in touch with us so we can arrange for a local Training Centre to conduct your exam. There will be a charge for this to cover the cost of the invigilator's time.

Closed Book Exercise

Accepted Answer

The assessment paper is a closed-book exercise, meaning you cannot look up the answers elsewhere. However, you are allowed to have resources that you might have on a boat, such as your Almanac.

You can use your Training Almanac to look up information as you would in the real world.

Is there an exam for the Day Skipper theory course?

There are two assessment papers for Day Skipper Theory students. one on Chart work and a General Assessment.

One covers chart work & navigation, the other is a general assessment focusing on passage planning, rules & safety.

When can I do the Day Skipper theory exam?

Once Day Skipper theory students have completed all course modules, they can request access to the assessment papers.

Access is given for seven days at a time of their choosing. Both assessment papers should be completed with the seven days. They can be done in any order and don't have to be done together.

Is there a time limit for doing the exam?

The most significant benefit of online learning is flexibility! We support our students when they are doing the course, but sometimes, life gets in the way of our best intentions & we don't believe you should have to extend your course because of the time constraints we put on you.

Every student gets 12 months of active instructor support, but you can pause this up to 3 times. Of course, this doesn't mean you lose access to the content; you have this for life, so you can still continue learning even if you pause your active support.

All we ask is that you complete the assessment within three years and within your active support time. (We think that's reasonable).

What happens if I fail the exam?

We'll prepare you well for the exam; however, we can organise a retake or partial retake with different questions if you fail.

Every student has a debriefing after completing both assessment papers; it is the ideal opportunity to discuss options and possible retakes, if appropriate. It's up to the instructor doing the debriefing to decide if a student is up to the level for passing the course.
