Anchor Dragging: When a vessel displays the Yankee flag, it indicates that the vessel is experiencing a situation where its anchor is not holding and the vessel is drifting or dragging the anchor. This could be due to weather conditions, insufficient holding ground, or other factors causing the anchor to fail to maintain the vessel’s position.

Code Flag Yankee (Y)

Nautical or signal flags are used at sea to convey messages over long distances. Only black, blue, red, white and yellow are used because these are the only colours readily distinguished at sea. Many different coding schemes have been used, but the International Code is the most common.
