3 – Three (Tree)

In marine terminology, “three” (often pronounced as “tree” in a maritime context) is a signal used to indicate the number 3 in communication between vessels or personnel. This signal can be conveyed visually using hand signals or flags, or verbally over the radio. It is important for clear and accurate communication to ensure safety and efficiency in maritime operations.

Nautical or signal flags are used at sea to convey long-range messages. Only black, blue, red, white and yellow are used because these are the only colours readily distinguished at sea. Many different coding schemes have been used, but the International Code is the most common.
