Latitude

« Back to Glossary Index

Parallels of latitude are parallel equidistant lines running north and south from the zero degree point at the equator. They are graduated at one degree intervals starting at zero degrees at the equator to 90 degrees at the North and South Poles, hence 30 degrees north or 45 degrees south. Each degree is divided into 60 divisions called minutes and further sub-divided into tenths of a minute.
