How to read the map!

Understanding how to read and interpret charts, whether paper or electronic, is central to remaining safe. At the heart of all navigation is the ability to interpret a chart.

Learn how to read, interpret & use paper and electronic charts.

Approximately 4 hours

At the heart of all navigation is the ability to interpret a chart. Whether paper-based or electronic (chart plotter), we need to understand charts to remain safe. Unlike land-based navigation, there aren’t roads to follow and we cannot necessarily see the terrain or hazards; after all, they may be covered in water.

We have a range of tools at our disposal to enable safe navigation. From Charts to Almanacs, this module introduces the publications & tools available, the relationships between them and how to interpret the information they provide.

This module is part of the Day Skipper theory course.
